According to recent data, such as that provided by the UK communications regulator Ofcom, up to 40% of content shared on social media may be false, highlighting the scale of the problem and the need to address it from a critical and rigorous perspective.

A study to understand economic misinformation

The study has been developed by the Marketing, Communication and Business Development Commission of the College of Economists of Catalonia after a year of monitoring. It analyses the proliferation of misleading economic content and provides tools to identify it.

It also includes the participation of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Girona, who have analysed the use of artificial intelligence tools to detect fakes and deepfakes.

During the session, practical cases of economic misinformation identified across the College’s regional offices will also be presented.

Key speakers from the economic and institutional sphere

The event will feature Daniel Lacalle, a leading international economist, and Javier Quesada, head of the Central Unit for Fraud and Payment Methods of the Mossos d’Esquadra, who will share their insights on the impact and prosecution of economic fraud.

The study will be presented by members of the Commission, including Víctor Bottini, Carme Casablanca —professor at UAB— and Alfred Pumares.
