•Título: Small Science: construcción histórica de la investigación contemporánea a pequeña escala (SMALLSCIENCE).
Investigador Principal: Xavier Roqué.
Funding Agency: Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
Period: 2024- 2027.
SMALLSCIENCE is a research project funded by the "Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento” program (2023). The members of the research team, led by Dr. Xavier Roqué, include researchers from different universities with backgrounds in Physics, History, Astronomy, and Engineering (at different stages in their careers) who share a common concern for small-scale research practices in their various dimensions.
The project will provide the first systematic analysis, both in Spain and abroad, of the historical construction of the category "small science." Broadly speaking, small science refers to the work of a small group of researchers producing pioneering knowledge with modest means. The project will investigate the emergence, meanings, and values of an essential type of contemporary science, though often unrecognized.
This project challenges the historiographical and political hegemony of Big Science by examining three different aspects of the historical construction of "small science" and critically reexamining the relationship between small- and large-scale research. It will shed light on a key but often overlooked feature of contemporary science, linking the history of science with various disciplines.
