"Is global warming accelerating? Are we in time to stop it at 1.5, 2 or 3°C?"
Description:
Pep Canadell, executive director of the Global Carbon Project (GCP) and head of research at the Australian National Science Agency (CSIRO), will give this conference, which has been organised by the UAB and CREAF, of which Canadell is, respectively, alumnus and scientific advisor.
Greenhouse gas emissions, which come mainly from fossil fuels and agricultural systems, continue to grow and the increase in their atmospheric concentrations has been accelerating in recent years. This continued increase jeopardises reaching the targets set in the 2016 Paris Agreement: the progressive reduction of greenhouse gases until 2050, when net zero emissions (matching what is emitted with what is captured) would have to be achieved to limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
In his lecture, Canadell will address questions such as: Is global warming accelerating, as some experts suggest? Will we be able to achieve the goal of stopping it at 1.5°C or, at least, of not exceeding the 2°C set by Paris? What efforts are needed and by whom? What are the dangers of not achieving this?
The Global Carbon Project (GCP) is an organisation made up of dozens of international scientists from more than 90 institutions that has been providing detailed information on natural and anthropogenic carbon dioxide sources and sinks every year since 2006. Its reports are a reference source for the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which reports on climate change caused by human activities.
The conference is open tot he general public and will include the collaboration of the Catalan Biology Society through its Vallès Regional Section.
Place: Faculty of Science and Biosciences (conference hall)

Science Carriage Expert's Seat: Let's talk about energetic transition
Description:
Daniel Campos and Xavier Álvarez hold PhDs in Physics and their research focuses on the physics of biological and social systems and the transport of energy. In the Expert's Seat of the UAB Science Carriage, the two will converse with passengers on energetic transition, a change from non-renewable energy sources to a model in which the energy used is more sustainable, and how citizens play an important role in this process.
The journey will begin at 9:28 a.m. on the FGC train travelling from Plaça Catalunya to the Universitat Autònoma train station.
Place: FGC - Plaça Catalunya station
Date: Thursday 3, October2024 - 09:28h

The revolutionary potential of a caring democracy
Description:
Joan C. Tronto, emeritus professor of the City University of New York and the University of Minnesota, and one of the greatest exponents of the ethics of care and democracy, will visit the UAB and offer a conference at the Rectorat building on 10 October at 4 p.m. The conference will be open to all members of the UAB community. Organised by the UAB Department of Philosophy, the conference is entitled "El potencial revolucionario de una democracia del cuidado" and will focus on the revolutionary potential of a care democracy.
In her books Moral Boundaries, Caring Democracy and Who cares?, Tronto details a conceptual approach to care. Her ideas have inspired sectors such as nursing and the processes of humanising health, as well as ethics, sociology and the study of sex division in the workplace, economics, political sciences, and in the art and architectural world, as well as other areas.
Place: Rectorat building (conference hall)
Date: Thursday 10, October2024 - 16:00h
End date: Thursday 10, October2024 - 18:00h

Science Carriage Expert's Seat: Let's talk about regenerative agriculture and high altitude lands
Description:
Sara Marañón holds a PhD in Ecology and her research focuses on the effects of global change and the disturbances caused to ecosystems. At the UAB Science Carriage Expert's Seat, she will converse with passengers on regenerative agriculture, which aims to replenish the soil and guarantee that it has enough organic material and carbon to help it continue to be fertile land. Regenerative agriculture is based on the basic pillars of agriculture: soil and its quality, and how this relates to its capacity to store or release CO2.
The journey will begin at 10:42 a.m. on the FGC train travelling from the Universitat Autònoma to the Plaça Catalunya station.
Place: FGC Universitat Autònoma station

Mountain ecosystems at the Experts' Seat of the Science Carriage
Description:
Bernat Claramunt is a researcher at CREAF and lecturer of Ecology at the UAB. His research focuses on strategies for sustainable development of mountain socio-ecological systems, with a holistic approach that includes not only the natural components of a region, but also its social and economic context. In the expert's seat he will talk with passengers about how climate change modifies these mountain systems and the ecosystem services and the benefits that humans obtain.
The journey will begin at 9:28 a.m. and will go from the Plaça Catalunya ---> Universitat Autònoma stations.
