Exhibition “dONes: motor of marine and environmental research” at the Veterinary Library and the Science and Technology Library

During the month of May, the Veterinary Library and the Science and Technology Library will host the exhibition “dONes: motor of marine and environmental research”, a project of the Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) and the School of the Sea of Badalona, with the collaboration of the FECYT (MICINN).

This exhibition aims to make visible the work of six women who have worked to know and protect the ocean and the planet: Lynn Margulis, Ángeles Alvariño, Marta Estrada, Josefina Castellví, Rachel Carson and Sylvia Earle.

“Marine and environmental sciences, oceanography and polar exploration have traditionally been highly masculinized professional fields, and, in this environment, they were scientifically underestimated for years. Some had to disguise themselves as a man to be able to sail, others did so only as companions of their husbands or their department’s bosses.With this exhibition we want to make public various personal and professional aspects of women who have been pioneers in these fields, opening doors and also being powerful references for so many scientists, techniques and students.”

You can find this exhibition from May 4th to 15th at the Veterinary Library and from May 18th to 30th at the Science and Technology Library.

In the Josefina Castellví Room of the Veterinary Library, you can also find a collection of watercolour paintings that evoke the polar landscapes and moments that marked the life of Josefina Castellví, made by Natàlia Noemí Fouquet.

And, in the Science and Technology Library, the exhibition will be accompanied by a bibliographic selection with books written by the six women protagonists and about the science they developed.
