It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Uwe Mamat, a distinguished and deeply cherished researcher in the field of applied microbiology. Professor Mamat was admired not only for his scientific acumen and substantial contributions to microbiological research but also for his warmth, empathy, generosity, and unwavering dedication, to his work, his collaborators, and his wife Claudia.

Professor Mamat’s academic career was marked by a commitment to advancing the frontiers of microbiology through rigorous investigation and collaborative inquiry. His work spanned multiple domains of applied microbiology, including innovative molecular tools for microbial labelling, mutagenesis and characterization, exemplified by his co-authorship on studies such as the development of improved mini-Tn7 delivery plasmids for fluorescent labelling of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and the generation of LPS-free Escherichia coli strains. Throughout his career, Professor Mamat forged deep and lasting collaborations with researchers across institutions and disciplines. Several members of the IBB (Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and numerous other colleagues will remember him as a generous scientific partner whose open spirit and thoughtful engagement enriched joint projects in microbiology applied to environmental, clinical, and biotechnological contexts.

Beyond his professional achievements, Professor Mamat was known for his empathetic mentorship and his readiness to support colleagues and students alike. His generosity of spirit extended far beyond the laboratory; he nurtured community, sustained friendships, and embodied the virtues of collegial partnership at every stage of his career. To his family, Professor Mamat was a devoted presence whose love and dedication were evident to all who knew him. In the scientific community and beyond, his loss is felt deeply. His legacy, through his scholarship, his collaborations, and his character, will continue to inspire peers and future generations of researchers.

We will remember him with love.
