On Wednesday, February 18, the first Geography in Action workshop of the academic year took place: Geoinformation as a Source of Knowledge, with the participation of second-year high school students from Enric Borràs Secondary School in Badalona.

The workshop began with a presentation on geographic information and GIS tools, followed by an overview of the diversity of research carried out in the Department of Geography, highlighting the importance of processing geographic information in research activities. Examples of research projects were presented on diverse topics such as mobility, gender, forest fires, and landscape evolution.

In the second part of the workshop, several key concepts were introduced to frame the subsequent work: territory, urban space, quality of life, and territorial planning. Based on these ideas, students were invited to apply a geographical perspective to their own environment and were asked the question: “If you could improve or change something in your territory, what would you do?”

This activity fostered discussion, and proposals closely linked to their everyday reality emerged. Once the topic was chosen, each group worked with a guideline that helped them define the problem, identify its causes and consequences, and propose feasible solutions. They then prepared a poster presenting their project. The workshop concluded with the presentation of the six projects: “Per conviure tots i totes”, “Sostre Digne”, “Millorem l’habitatge a Badalona”, “BadaloNeta”, “Badalona Connecta”, and “Badalona Segura”.

The Geography in Action workshop, delivered by Meritxell Gisbert and Laura Sala, was organized by the Department of Geography and the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) at UAB.
