The research presents a new metal-free photocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of diazo-containing heterocycles

The CatSyNanoMat group from the Organic Chemistry Section has published a new study in the scientific journal Organic Letters, which has been selected to appear on the cover of the journal.

The study describes a metal-free photocatalytic strategy for the modular synthesis of diazo-containing oxindoles and pyrazolones from readily available precursors.

Although diazo groups typically react under visible light irradiation, the use of white LEDs allows this functionality to remain intact within the oxindole structure, representing a significant advance in this type of transformation.

The methodology enables the formation of C(sp²)–C(sp³) bonds with broad tolerance toward different functional groups and pharmaceutically relevant motifs. The work also includes mechanistic studies confirming the involvement of radical processes and distinguishing the EDA and photoredox pathways involved in the reaction.

The selection of the image for the cover of Organic Letters represents an international recognition of the group’s research in the field of photocatalysis.
