ISO/TS 7446:2026 published to strengthen biorisk management

The publication of ISO/TS 7446:2026 (Implementation guidance for biorisk management for laboratories and other related organizations) has recently been announced. This technical specification is intended to support the operational implementation of ISO 35001 in environments working with biological agents.

The document provides a structured and practical framework based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) continuous improvement cycle, addressing key areas such as organizational leadership, planning, operations, performance evaluation, and continuous improvement of biorisk management systems.

Among its core elements, the guidance emphasizes the systematic identification of hazards and structured risk assessment, together with the application of layered control strategies. This approach prioritizes risk elimination, followed by engineering controls and administrative measures, and ultimately the use of personal protective equipment.

ISO/TS 7446:2026 also highlights essential factors for effective implementation, including staff training, clear communication, stakeholder engagement, and the establishment of enhanced measures for high-risk biological activities.

Its scope is cross-cutting and applicable to a wide range of organizations, including laboratories, clinical settings, research facilities, production environments, and field activities.
