Why did you decide to do a PhD project in our Department?

After some short field veterinary work, I was interested in the swine production, nutrition and veterinary science while doing my masters. I never thought about a PhD career since research seemed to me a slower motion job compared to other fields. During my masters I realized slow pace is not the case when research is conducted in a department highly linked to the industry and including several PhD students and projects ongoing simultaneously. I had the chance to contribute on a project proposal that ended up being my PhD and the beginning of my professional career as researcher. Currently I am working as a researcher in Trouw Nutrition R&D (The Netherlands).

What are your future career goals?

In my case, the PhD at Department of Animal and Food Science in UAB built a foundation for further developing a career in swine research with emphasis on the industry needs. I still expect to develop such researcher role for some years with a focus linking the swine nutrition and veterinary medicine.

What is your advice to potential students?

A PhD in the Department of Animal and Food Science in UAB will challenge you and develop your scientific methodology. There will be opportunities to build networking and develop professional skills very important later in your professional career with a wide range of options. Over time, grant yourself the opportunity to take responsibilities and leadership under supervision for those specific skills you want. The department will ask you to work for high quality standards, I suggest you take that with you in the future. The department, the PhD life, and the work itself are not perfect and will challenge you, make sure you share any frustration with colleagues and other students that will become friends. The group was (hope still is) a very nice atmosphere to develop your personal life side to your work which is most important.
