New project to make presence of bears and wolves more compatible with rural activities in the Pyrenees

The European project LoupO Coexistence was recently launched with the aim of favouring a cross-border conservation of the biodiversity of the Pyrenees in France, Spain and Andorra. The project includes the monitoring and management of brown bear (Ursus arctos) and wolf (Canis lupus) populations, and the study of how the inhabitants of the Pyrenees view these two species.

The UAB has been designated a national center of excellence in animal welfare in partnership with the Institute for Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA) and Expasa Agricultura y Ganadería. The designation, approved by the Government via a royal decree, will be valid for four years and reinforces the scientific and institutional leadership of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in this strategic field.

Horses play a key role in forest management and in reducing the risk of wildfires in Mediterranean forests, thanks to the adaptability of their eating habits. This is the conclusion reached by an interdisciplinary study led by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the University of Lleida (UdL), recently published in the journal Agroforestry Systems.
