UAB women’s futsal team competes at the University Championships of Catalonia, which are coordinated by ECU (in English, Catalan University Sports) with other sports such as rugby or beach football. UAB women’s futsal team was created this year by 12 UAB students which are also players of the first and second división of the Catalan League and therefore already knew eachother and acted together in order to organize the team. With ages between 18 and 23, they study Medicine, Jornalism or Business Administration, among other degrees. Practices are not always easy to combine, because the diversity of degrees carries a diversity of schedules, but they at least count on the SAF facilities to practice. They manage themselves and hired two coaches to help them, who just finished the degrees of Physiotherapy and Audiovisual Communication at the UAB. Their main task is to organize practice schedules and check the players’ availability for competitons.

This year’s University Championship of Catalonia took place in Igualada. The women’s futsal competition had teams representing all Catalan universities, and for the first time also the UAB. Even though it was the first year for the UAB team, they manage to classificate for the final and win the Girona team on March 17. This victory gave them the right to participate in the Spanish Championship that took place on May 3, 4 and 5. However, UAB is the only university that does not support economically the players, and therefore the team could not afford the cost of going to the city of Antequera (Málaga province).

Due to their absence, women’s UAB futsal team faces a sanction that would not allow them to compete next year in the Catalan Championship, nor in the Spanish one.
