On February 28th, the team composed by the students of the UAB Edward Bernal, Marc Castilla and Luis Gaspar, was proclaimed winner of the local phase of the University Debate League of 2018. During last weekend, the team has been preparing in the Autonomous for the final phase of the league, organized by the Catalan University Network, which will take place at the University of Elche from April 16th to 20th, 2018. For this last phase, Lucía Dominguez, member of the subchampion team of the local phase, has joined the group

The sessions were given by Rashid Aarab, researcher in international relations and member of the jury in the local phase of the University Debate League, and Ester Tur of the Language Service, and were held in Room 1 of the Center of Resources for Student Societies of the UAB. He is grateful for the collaboration of Mar Griera, director of the Research team in Sociology of Religion (ISOR) of the UAB. The days of debate of the local phase began on February 27th and ended Friday 28th in the Theater Hall of the UAB. A total of eight teams participated.

The UAB team has been assigned the B1 position for the final phase and, to qualify for the semifinals, must overcome three debates: the first will be today, Tuesday, April 16th, from 14:00 h to 14:45 h; the second, Tuesday 17th from 12:45 h until 1:30 h and, finally, the last one will take place on Wednesday the 18th from 11:30 h to 12:45 h. The subject of debate will be the same as the one they faced in the local phase: "Is the West responsible for the emergence of the Islamic State?".

The goal of the Debate League is for students to improve their communication skills when speaking in public and to express themselves correctly before an audience, skills increasingly important for university students. Participating in this activity is a way to enhance oratory skills. Students who participate are divided into teams of a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 5, and must defend a position for or against the topic being debated.
