Encouraging discrimination-free spaces

The Observatori per a la Igualtat starts the third  “#comunicaccio”, by which we want to create a network of discrimination-free areas in the university.

“This is a free-discrimination space and people are respected, regardless of their race, ethnicity, expression, sexual orientation, etc.”. This is what you can read at the poster for a “Discrimination-free Space”, which has been created by the Observatori per a la Igualtat in the third phase of the campaign “#comunicaccio”. It started the 8th of March, and, among other things, it proposed to denounce and respond to discriminations in the campusin order to create a “Map of Discriminations” – which is open and it can be consulted here-. During the last months, students, PAS and PDI that joined #comunicacció have sent us various situations of racism, sexism and homophobia, and the ways they have found to respond to them. From the Observatori per a la Igualtat de la UAB, we want to take a step forward to reach a discrimination-free university, inspiring all the university community to take on a commitment in the prevention and action against any type of discrimination. This is why this phase inspires the UAB community to declare their spaces free of “sexism, racism and homophobia” by hanging the poster (attached to the piece of news) in their workplace, accepting the message that it proposes.

With the objective of giving the initial shot to this part of the campaign, the next 20th of May at 13:00, there will be a performance consisting on declaring, symbolically, Plaça Cívica as the first discrimination-free space. This performance is part of the program “What can the University do to face the growth of fascism?”, which is organized by Àmbit de Participació, taking advantage of the international day against homophobia and transphobia that takes place on 17th of May.

In order to create a free-discrimination university, we should start by looking around, taking awareness in our everyday relationships. This is why we encourage you to participate in this activity and extend this campaign in your students collective, research groups, department, office, area or service, and so on. Do not be quiet; come to declare Plaça Cívica a free-discrimination space.
