On 20 October, the Àngels Torrents Hall at the Centre for Demographic Studies will play host to a seminar on the crisis currently affecting the state of welfare entitled "Ayudar y recibir ayuda: mercado laboral y seguridad social".

The seminar will include several conferences and debates presented and moderated by experts in the field such as Albert Esteve, Director of the Centre for Demographic Studies, and Pau Miret, researcher and adjunct lecturer of the UAB Department of Sociology. Researchers and students are invited to participate actively in the seminar through communications or simply by attending the event.

The seminar will focus on the reflections different guest speakers will offer on the concept introduced in several works, also included in the book "Por el bien del imperio" (2011) by historian Josep Fontana. Fontana states that the state of welfare, created after the Second World War, is being threatened since the economic crisis of the 1970s. Although the main focus is on the current situation of young people and the difficulties in entering the labour market, experts will also highlight the situation and negative effects suffered by adults in a state of welfare created precisely to care for them at this age.

Based on this paradigm and specifically studying social security and the relation between demography, the current professional situation of young people and the pensions system, on 20 October Pau Miret from the UAB's CED will give a conference entitled "El paraguas de la Seguridad Social: quien lo sostiene y quien se resguarda". Concepció Patxot from the University of Barcelona, will talk about the impact of demographic changes in "Família, mercado y estado de bienestar: El impacto del cambio demográfico".  CED researcher Amand Blanes will communicate the conclusion of this seminar.

The seminar is part of the R&D&i project "Acicates en la prolongación de la vida laboral: salud, formación y convivencia", co-directed by Pau Miret and Amand Blanes and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
