On 4 December, the Government of Catalonia's Ministry for Social Rights held the 2023 Civic Awards ceremony, in which the Controvèrsia a l'aula project conducted by the UAB School for a Culture of Peace and produced by the company Fora de Quadre, received the Serra i Moret Award in recognition for the paedogogical work recorded in this documentary.

Controvèrsia a l'aula

The documentary Controvèrsia a l'aula lasts 55 minutes and was recorded at the Torres Jonama school in Palafrugell and in the secondary school Ca N'Oriac of Sabadell in 2022. Its main aim is to serve as a tool for teachers and help them foster controversial conversations within the classroom. This initiative was born from the need to promote a stronger cohesion among in Catalonia's society, characterised by a diversity in individuals, groups and ideologies.

The film shows primary and secondary school teachers encouraging students to engage in critical thinking activities in the classroom. It also includes an interview with Antoni Santisteban, lecturer in the UAB Department of Language and Literature Education and Social Science Education. The documentary touches on some of the aspects making up the "Discrepància benvinguda" project being conducted by Marina Caireta and Cécile Barbeito, members of the UAB School for a Culture of Peace, in which they provide ways in which to increase critical thinking within the classrooms. Controvèrsia a l'aula also forms part of an audiovisual series created by the UAB School in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Fora de Quadre, as part of the project entitled "Enfortim el pensament crític en temps de pandèmia, construïm cultura de pau" [Strengthening Critical Thinking in a Moment of Pandemic, Building a Culture for Peace].

The Civic Awards aim to recognise projects, organisations and individuals who, from different professional profiles and ages, work towards civil responsibility, aid society to reflect on issues, and foster social improvements. The Serra i Moret Award first appeared in 1982 as a tribute to writer and politician Manuel Serra i Moret, and aims to award written texts and educational projects focusing on civility.
