Dr Vassil Tzanov is an applied mathematician from Sofia, Bulgaria.
As a P-Sphere fellow, he works at UAB in the Department of Electronics Engineering. Vassil does numerical modelling of nano- and micro-resonators within the Electronic Circuits and Systems Research Group (ECAS) led by Nuria Barniol.
His contract as a P-Sphere fellow is due to expire at the end of August 2019.

Before the P-Sphere fellowship, Vassil was a freelance researcher working on the problem of Magnetic Field Architecture (MFA) for Cloudify LLC and their Hyperloop project. Also, in 2015, he had an Erasmus for Young Enterpreneurs scholarship at FabLab Barcelona where he developed a prototype of a solar powered bicycle.

In 2012 Vassil obtained his PhD in Engineering Mathematics from the University of Bristol, UK with a scholarship from EPSRC. Previously, he had earned his Bachelor (Applied Mathematics) and Master (Mathematical Physics) degrees from Sofia University, Bulgaria.

Vassil's current focus is on nanotechnology and more precisely, vibrations of nanostructures, and acoustics of piezoelectric membranes.

Since his fellowship started, he is investigating several phenomena related to mechanical vibrations at nano- and micro-scale: superharmonic responses in nanobeam resonators, vibration modes of fractal nanoresonators, the structural and acoustic dynamics of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs); see the conference proceedings in the publications section.

The Nonlinear Dynamics takes an important part in his research. Vassil was introduced to the topic during his PhD when he was part of the Bristol Centre for Applied Nonlinear Mathematics (BCANM). During that period, he was investigating the nonlinear vibrations of suspended cable under harmonic excitation; see doi.org/10.1142/S0218127414300249.

Another topic that he is interested in, which is in close-relation with nonlinear dynamics, is the study and application of fractal shapes in science and technology.

In the meanwhile, influenced by the time spent in FabLab Barcelona, Vassil is involved in minor DIY sustainability projects related mainly to refurbished Li-ion batteries from laptops.
