11F at ICTA-UAB: "Women in Science: when superpowers are real"
Feb 11th is International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
With the title "Women in Science: when superpowers are real", ICTA-UAB is launching a campaign to vindicate the importance of women in science with a video that shows in a fun way the most outstanding personal and scientific qualities of its researchers and their contribution to a better science.
A lot of successful women get tired of being called superheroes. In reality, most have had to work twice as hard as men to get to where they are. The world of science is no different. Women only make up 33% of the world's researchers. They are typically given smaller research grants than their male colleagues, and only 12% of members of national science academies are women. Yet, women are superheroes, in a sense. Because they bring something extra.
The real superpowers of women lie in the essential balance, unique qualities and critical perspectives they bring to science. And for that, science is better off. Science needs women. At ICTA-UAB, our Gender Policy is part of our commitment to championing women in science.
Head of Gender Diversity & Wellbeing Isabelle Anguelovski says, "Women not only bring their unique qualities, we bring commitment to transformational change. But we're tired of doing this equity thing on our own. Gender equity is everyone's responsability. Men have to do that work with us, together."
