U. Excellence María de Maeztu
ICTA-UAB was accredited as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence by the Spanish Government in 2015 (MDM-2015-0552), in 2019 (CEX2019-0940-M) and again in 2025 (CEX2024-001506-M). This accreditation consists of a 2.25 million Euro grant of core funding (and an additional 0.75M€ for training of predoctoral researchers) spread over four years, which contributes to the following activities:
- The development of a strategic research programme structured 4 transversal themes, namely Justice; Bold Alternatives; Planetary Health, Boundaries and Wellbeing; and Critical Data Interventions. These themes respond to the paradoxes inherent in the scale, complexity, depth and reach of socio-environmental challenges, and weave new knowledge into ICTA-UAB’s interdisciplinary Societal Challenges (OCEANS, LAND, CITIES, CONSUMPTION, and POLICIES), which should contribute to extend global environmental change research and make of ICTA-UAB an international pole of attraction for talent;
- The strengthening of knowledge transfer and scientific co-production capabilities, and an increased reach of our communication efforts and policy impact;
- The upgrading of existing MSc programmes, and the delivery of specific trainings focused on methodological and research management skills, offered to PhDs, post-doctoral researchers and senior staff; and
- The improvement of governance systems, by deepening our commitment to gender parity and to the enhancement of staff’s wellbeing, and by developing protocols to reduce the environmental footprint of our academic activities.
