From the glaciers of Alaska to toxic battlefields, the documentary "Earth’s Greatest Enemy" reveals an often silenced reality: the US military as the world's most polluting institution. Through testimonies of veterans and scientists, the film analyses how militarism poisons ecosystems and accelerates global warming.  

The film screening will be followed by a talk with its director, Abby Martin, and researchers from CREAF and ICTA-UAB, to debate the impact of militarism on the environment.

Ana Cerezuela is researcher in the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and member of the UAB's AFIN research group.

In the Expert Seat of the Science Carriage, Ana Cerezuela will explain when and how the current terms that define the acronym LGBTIQ+ emerged. She will also review the history of this group of people, which has been marked by discrimination and exclusion, and the situation in which we currently find ourselves.

Description:

This workshop aims to familiarize participants with the conceptual tools which have been developed in the history of emotions and, more recently, in the history of experience for the renewal of the history of science, medicine, and technology.

Drawing on the most significant research that has been conducted since the announcement of the so-called "affective turn", we will show that emotions have a long history that is intimately linked to the social, cultural, and material history of science. We will examine the main theories that have transformed emotions into an object of scientific study, as well as the role that emotions have played in the processes of observation and experimentation, and in shaping the social formation of the scientific ethos.

Finally, we will analyze the inherent methodological limitations of using emotion as a category of analysis and the advantages of adopting the approach proposed by the history of experience in order to understand the history of science. This exercise will lead us to explore how marginalized groups within the scientific field have —through their experiences— constituted a plurality of knowledge(s), which has the potential to broaden the horizons of the history of science.

Dolores Martín Moruno is a senior research scientist at the Milà i Fontanals Institution for Research in the Humanities (CSIC) in Barcelona. This seminar is part of the “Workshops on Historiographic Tools” (WHITS) series and is part of Module 7 "Individual, health and society: Science and biopower" in the "University Master’s degree in History of Science: Science, History and Society" (UAB-UB-UPF-CSIC). It is primarily aimed at master students but is open to the entire academic community.

Description:

An information session entitled "Inside the EU: professional opportunities at European institutions" will take place on 13 April at 4:00 p.m. The event is organised by the UAB European Documentation Centre, with the aim of raising awareness of the benefits of a career in the field of the EU institutions. The conference will be given by speaker Tilmann Morata, policy officer in the Clean, Just & Competitive Transition team of the Commission Priorities and Strategic Coordination unit (DG Competition, European Commission). Morata will discuss his personal experience within the European institutions, as well as explain which are the most suitable itineraries to guide the start of a career in the EU.

The seminar is part of the context of the upcoming public examinations for administrators called by the European Personnel Selection Office, with a total of 1,490 individuals expected to work in these entities. The call allows access to a professional career in the field, in addition to offering opportunities for graduates with different profiles, such as in economics, law, governance, and international relations. The scheduled activity will be held in an online format through Microsoft Teams. To attend, it is necessary to register using the following form.
