Book presentation on Alianza Popular/Partido Popular
Description:
Carme Molinero and Pere Ysàs, lecturers in History at the UAB and authors of the book Alianza Popular / Partido Popular. Del franquismo a la democracia (1976-1996), will be presenting their book on Wednesday 18 February in Barcelona.
The book allows readers to follow the trajectory of the conservative political party Alianza Popular (AP)—which later changed its name to Partido Popular (PP)—during the first twenty years of Spanish democracy. It highlights several important facts: AP did not take part in the constitutional consensus, yet later claimed the status of a constitutionalist and autonomist party. It also rejected most reformist legislation proposed by both UCD and PSOE governments, but eventually accepted it once it recognised its broad support within Spanish society.
