Refuge in Spain: negligence, arbitrariness and abandonment in a collapsed system
Description:
On 17 June at 11:00 a.m., the Research Group on Immigration and Ethnic Minorities (GEDIME) and the Migration Studies and Research Centre of the UAB organise a sesssion entitled "Refugi a Espanya: negligència, arbitrarietat i desemparament en un sistema col·lapsat" [Asylum in Spain: negligence, arbitrariness and abandonment in a collapsed system]. The session will take place at the meeting room of the UAB Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology and aims to analyse from a critical viewpoint the current situation of the asylum and refugee system in Spain. Focus will be put on institutional negligences, administrative arbitrariness, and the abandonment of those seeking international protection.
The conference will be given by Arnau Poy, lecturer in sociology at the UAB. Poy will reflect onthe social, political and legal consequences of a collapsed system, as well as on the obstacles encountered by refugees when trying to access their rights, when applying for asylum and in receiving effective protection.

2026 Argó Awards to upper secondary school research papers
Description:
On 18 June at 4:00 p.m., the UAB will be holding the awards ceremony for the 23rd Argó Awards in the category of upper secondary school research papers. The event will take place at the UAB Auditorium, located at the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. The Argó Awards, organised by the Institute for Education Studies (ICE), were created to acknowledge the effort and quality of research work by upper secondary school students from educational centres in Catalonia. The aim is to facilitate the transition to higher education and strengthen the links between the university and educational centrer in the region.
In this category, the awards are given in different fields of knowledge: arts and humanities, sciences, health sciences, social and legal sciences, biosciences, and engineering. The verdict will be made public on 3 June on the ICE website.

Summer Solstice Party with the Amics UAB
Description:
The Amics UAB organises a new edition of its Summer Solstice Party. The activity will take place at the Torre Vila-Puig on 18 June at 7:00 p.m. Those interested in attending should to register here.
The solstice party will be dedicated to peace, diversity and the role of culture as a mechanism for social transformation, and is inspire by the musician Pau Casals, who stands as a universal symbol of commitment to human rights. The evening will include several activities: a performance by the cello and guitar duo Clarobscur, a theatrical and multilingual reading of Pau Casals' speech to the United Nations, the creation of a time capsule with wishes for peace, and the recording of audiovisual messages for the future.

Conference on intercultural communication in the healthcare field
Description:
The research group Mediation, Interpreting and Research in the Social Field (MIRAS) organises the 10th Catalan Public Services Interpreting Conference, focused this year on intercultural communication mediated by interpreters in the health field.
The programme offers a set of training activities and debates such as practical workshops, conferences and applied analysis sessions, among which the plenary conference "Overcoming language barriers in the provision of health services in the US" stands out, given by Cindy Roat, pioneer of health interpreting in the US. There will also be a training course for health personnel, given by Sofía García, Mattea Jean, and Helena Villares, lecturer, researcher and student, respectively, of translation and interpreting at the UAB.
La jornada clourà amb una sèrie de sessions en què es presentaran els resultats del projecte CIMAS i amb un debat en què intervindran diversos perfils professionals involucrats en la Comunicació Intercultural Mediada, moderat per Mireia Vargas-Urpí, professora agregada del Departament de Traducció i d'Interpretació i d'Estudis de l'Àsia Oriental.
MIRAS lliurarà un certificat oficial de formació a totes aquelles persones que assisteixin a la formació de la jornada. La inscripció, gratuïta, es pot fer en aquest enllaç fins el 10 de juny.

Writing, reading and thinking: keys to transforming today's language classrooms
Description:
As part of the ARLE/IFTE 2026 Conference, the UAB Institute for Education Studies organises Escriure, llegir i pensar: claus per transformar l’aula de llengua avui [Writing, Reading and Thinking: keys to transforming today's language classrooms].
The activity will take place on 25 June at the UAB Faculty of Arts and Humanities and aims to reflect on language teaching. In this way, a space for exchange between international research and educational practice is created, academic debate is brought closer to the reality of classrooms, and teacher training is promoted through a critical and updated perspective. To attend, please complete the free prior registration through the ICE website.
The programme will begin at 8:55 a.m. with a presentation of the conference by Xavier Fontich and Dolors Masats, lecturers in Language and Literature Teaching at the UAB. At 9 :00 a.m. a conference entitled "Escriure per comunicar, comunicar aprenent" [Writing to Communicate, Communicating to Understand] will be given by Montserrat Castelló, professor of the Faculty of Psychology, Education and Sports of the Ramon Llull University, who will talk on the role of writing to help acquire knowledge and critical thinking.
Then, at 10:00 a.m., the session "Ensenyar a llegir i escriure amb un lloritu a l’aula" [Teaching to Read and Write with a Parrot in the Classroom] will be held, given by Daniel Cassany, lecturer in Discourse Analysis at the Pompeu Fabra University, who will address the impact of artificial intelligence on writing and reading practices. At 11:30 a.m., there will be a round table on "El luxe de pensar les llengües: divulgació, compromís i ciutadania" [The Luxury of Thinking about Languages: dissemination, commitment and citizenship]. Participating will be Luci Nussbaum, Artur Noguerol, Mila Segarra and Amparo Tuson, specialists in language and literature teaching who will reflect on the social value of languages and dissemination. Finally, at 12:30 p.m., "The Barcelona of Mercè Rodoreda" literary walk will be offered by Neus Real, lecturer in Language and Literature Teaching at the UAB, who will explore the relationship between urban spaces and the work of Mercè Rodoreda.

International Conference on Language and Literature Education ARLE/IFTE 2026
Description:
The UAB's International Association for Research in L1 Education (ARLE) organises the International Conference onf Language and Literature Education, ARLE/IFTE Barcelona 2026, which will be held from 25 to 27 June. The conference will take place at the Faculty of Arts & Humanities of the UAB, at the Rosa Sensat School in Barcelona, and at the Faculty of Geography of the University of Barcelona. The conference will focus mainly on the teaching of the first language and literature in a changing world: El viatge sense límits: L’ensenyament de la llengua primera i la literatura en un món canviant. The sessions will debate on topics related to the omnipresence of AI in education, access, language, relationships, technology, the narration of histories, diversities, identities and agencies in the research of L1 education in the world. The event will bring together educators from around the world to share celebrations and stories and honour Vygotsky's legacy on the 130th anniversary of his birth. AMong the participants will be Xavier Fontich, president of the ARLE of the UAB; Andy Goodwyn, president of the IFTE, who will present the conference; and Melinda Dooly, professor of language and literature at the UAB.
