Content Official Master's Degree in Applied Research in Economics and Business
Master description
The master's degree in Applied Research in Economics and Business, of a research-based focus, consists of 60 ECTS credits that are taken in two semesters over a single academic year. The distribution of these 60 ECTS credits corresponds to 45 obligatory credits, of which 30 are common modules; the master's degree dissertation is 15 credits, and the remaining 15 credits correspond to optional modules.
In the first semester, students take 30 common obligatory credits: the obligatory methodological-instrumental module (module 1: Quantitative Research Methods in Applied Research in Economics and Business) and the other obligatory thematic module (module 2: Applied Economics and Business), both of 15 credits. All students in the master’s degree must take these two modules in this semester.
The second semester consists of one of the two optional 15-credit modules taken in accordance with the chosen area of specialisation (module 3: Advanced Topics in Entrepreneurship and SME Management, or module 4: Advanced Topics in Applied Economics) and the required module corresponding to the master's degree dissertation (module 5), also of 15 credits.
In its second semester, the Master's Degree allows students to choose from one of the following two research areas of specialisation (optional credits):
Specialisation A) Research in Entrepreneurship and Management. The content of this area of specialisation is aimed at the theoretical and empirical analysis of the process of company creation and management, particularly focussing on small and medium-sized companies and their impact on economic and social development.
- Module 3 (Advanced Topics in Entrepreneurship and SME Management).
Specialisation B) Research in Applied Economics. The content of this area of specialisation is aimed at the theoretical and empirical analysis of the relation between the market and public intervention throughout the financial year, with special emphasis on the economy of the environment, the distribution of income and the local economy.
- Module 4 (Advanced Topics in Applied Economics)
Each area of specialisation consists of a 15-credit module, which is optional for the master’s degree as a whole but is considered obligatory within each area of specialisation.
Teaching timetable
Classes take place in the evenings, from 16:30h to 19:30h, Monday to Friday.
MAREB is a one-year research master, running from October to September. Welcome sessions take place during the last week of september, and teaching of the first two modules goes from the first week of October to the last one in January. Module 3 starts in February and finishes in April. The last term is dedicated to the master's thesis, which can be submitted in July or September.
Teaching takes place from Monday to Friday, between 16:30 and 19:30. Some activities (seminars, conferences, meetings) may be scheduled at different times.
