University Master's Degree in Theatre Studies

The only master’s degree in the Catalan university system, and one of the few in the Mediterranean region, to focus on both theoretical and practical theatre research

Admission Official Master's Degree in Theatre Studies

Access

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.

Admission requirements

  1. Graduates preferably in the field of Language Studies or Artistic Studies in Dramatic Art (any specialisation).  
  2. Foreign students who have not undertaken an Erasmus stay at Spanish universities, or who have not taken subjects in Spanish at their universities of origin, must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in Spanish (B2).
  3. It is recommended that those candidates interested in taking the optional subjects of Laboratories II should meet one of the following requirements:   

Drama Laboratory II

  • Advanced studies in dramatic writing or dramaturgy.
  • Training in an accredited professional centre (more than 60 hours) in dramatic writing or dramaturgy.
  • Professional experience in dramatic writing or dramaturgy, submitting the supporting documents: programmes, articles, reviews, publications.

Directors and Stage Designers Laboratory II:

  • Advanced studies in directors and stage designers.
  •  Training in an accredited professional centre (more than 60 hours) in directors and stage designers.
  • Professional experience as directors and stage designers, submitting the supporting documents: programmes, articles, reviews, publications.

In the event of not meeting any of the above requirements, access to these optional subjects will be possible if training supplements are taken during the first semester of the academic year.

A personal interview will also be held to determine the suitability of the candidate.

Selection criteria

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, places will be awarded in accordance with the following criteria:

  1. Academic record (25%)
  2. Letter of motivation (5%)
  3. Curriculum vitae (10%)
  4. Personal interview to assess: goals, prospects with the training and overall assessment of the candidate in relation to the documents submitted (20%)
  5. Match between the original qualification and the master’s degree (35%)
  6. Letter of recommendation (5%)

Complementary training

The multidisciplinary and cross-cutting nature of the master’s degree means that it will not be necessary to take training supplements, except in the following cases: 

  1. Those candidates who do not hold a degree in the field of Language Studies or Artistic Studies in Dramatic Art (any specialisation) will have to take training supplements up to a maximum of 12 credits within the academic year (Appendix: list of subjects). 
  2. Those candidates interested in taking one of the optional subjects of Laboratories II who do not meet any of the requirements indicated at the time of enrolling on the master’s degree must necessarily take the following training supplements: 

 a. Drama Laboratory II:  

  • Collective Dramaturgies (4 credits) 
  • Structures and Procedures of Contemporary Drama (4 credits)

b. Directors and Stage Designers Laboratory II: 

  • Stage design (4 credits)
  • Performance Methods (Viewpoints) (3 credits)
