The Bachelor's Degree in Genetics explores Genetics and Genomics in all their complexity, focusing in particular on molecular aspects, but with an interdisciplinary approach. Genetics has undergone a rapid expansion that will have a decisive effect on biology, health and society in general. Its range of applications is constantly widening and the biotechnology industry based on genomics and genetics shows great promise. The latest findings in these fields will lead to an increase in demand for specialists in genetics.
In the Spanish context new businesses are being set up that are directly linked to genetics and these are gaining in importance. Among the sectors where demand for genetics specialists will rise are: the pharmaceutical, biomedical and agro-food industries, plant and animal genetic improvement, diagnostic kits, clinical genetics, assisted reproduction, and forensic genetics.
The bachelor's degree includes subjects in bioethics, network theory, business management, and computer science, among others.
Among the universities that offer these studies are the University of Manchester (UK), University of Leicester (UK), University College of London (UK), University of Edinburgh (UK), Cornell University (USA) and McGill University (Canada).
It is aimed at students with an interest in the study of the genetic bases of life and the multiple applications derived from this knowledge.
The degree is appropriate for students wishing to work in basic research and teaching of genetics and similar sciences, and those wishing to acquire more applied training in the genomic, biomedical, biotechnological, pharmaceutical, agricultural and animal improvement, forensic genetics and bioethics fields, among others.
It is highly recommendable to have a good level in Biology and to have taken mathematics, physics and chemistry in Upper Secondary school. We also recommend that students should have a good level of English.
