Knowledge of the Latin language and of Old Catalan is essential for the identification and analysis of historical documentation produced within the Catalan sphere during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. This module offers specialised training in the reading and understanding of texts written in medieval diplomatic Latin and Old Catalan, providing the tools and knowledge required to approach the reading and comprehension of medieval and early modern documents written in Latin, without the need to have an advanced command of the language.
The programme begins with an introduction to the fundamental features of Classical Latin, offering the essential morphological and syntactic foundations needed to establish a solid base of knowledge of the language. Building on this foundation, it then addresses the specific characteristics of medieval diplomatic Latin and the origins of Old Catalan as encountered in Catalan historical documentation preserved in archival collections.
Thus, this module provides the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate the comprehension of texts and, through a predominantly practical approach, to familiarise students with the most frequent vocabulary and clauses found in documents of a legal nature.

- Individuals currently undergoing training in the field of general or historical archival studies.
- Technical and specialised staff working in historical, ecclesiastical, public or private archives.
- Professionals working in general and specialised libraries.
- Individuals in training in the field of history in general, and of medieval and early modern history in particular.
- Professionals involved in the processing of historical documents using emerging technologies (automated reading, automated data extraction, application of AI, etc.).
The training is structured in two parts: the first is an introduction to Classical Latin, offering the essential morphological and syntactic foundations needed to understand the basics of the language; the second part focuses on learning and deepening knowledge of Medieval Diplomatic Latin and the origins of Old Catalan, the language used in historical documentation from the Catalan area preserved in historical archives.
