"Parkinson's: a disease with treatments, but no cure"
Description:
Salvador Ventura, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine at the UAB, participates in the CaixaResearch debate, which aims to solve questions related to Parkinson's disease to help better understand this chronic and progressive disorder.
Also participating alongside Salvador Ventura, director of the research group in Protein Folding and Conformational Diseases (PPMC) of the IBB-UAB, will be researchers Miquel Vila, ICREA lecturer and researcher at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and Guillermo Foffani, from the HM CINAC Neurocentre. All three will explain the projects they they are conducting on Parkinson's disease and with fuding from the “la Caixa” Foundation.
The debate will seek to answer questions such as: What are the causes behind the neurodegenerative processes causing the disease? Do some treatments stop cognitive deterioration? What research projects in Spain can help with keys to improving early diagnoses and new preventive treatments, or at least ones that can slow down the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life of patients?
The debate will be streamed live. To be able to view it please fill out a short form at least one hour before the beginning of the event: https://caixaresearch.org/en/caixaresearch-debates-parkinson-treatments

Exhibition on the nuclear accident in Palomares at the Science and Technology Library
Description:
Until 30 June the UAB Science and Technology Library (BCT) will display an exhibition entitled "¡Bienvenido, Mr. Palomares! : radiografías fenomenológicas y filogenéticas de la nuclearización española: crónica sobre el blanqueamiento del fetichismo nuclear", created by student Adrián Camarós as part of his work placement module of the official master's degree in History of Science: Science, History and Society, under the guidance of Montserrat Monge (BCT) and Jaume Sastre-Juan (Institute of History of Science, IHC).
The academic work and exhibition highlights the Jordi Bigues - Fons Palomares Archives, available online through the UAB's DDD deposit. This archive was leased by Jordi Bigues himself in 2016. The journalist and activist coordinated as member of the board of directors of Greenpeace Spain the campaign in favour of the neighbours of the town of Palomares, Almeria, right before the indemnity period for the victims of the nuclear accident in 1966 was about to expire.
Place: Science and Technology Library (Espai BCT), UAB campus

International Workshop on Computational Nanotechnology
Description:
The UAB organises the 22nd edition of the International Workshop on Computational Nanotechnology (IWCN), a scientific meeting that aims to present and debate current trends and future directions in computational nanotechnology in the simulation of nanostructures, nanomaterials and nanodevices. An eminently interdisciplinary field involving areas such as electronics, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, chemistry and biology.
The workshop will be organised in a single-session format with different guest speakers, oral presentations, special sessions, forums and poster presentations on a variety of topics.
On 11 and 12 June, immediately before the IWCN, a satellite workshop entitled the International Wigner Workshop (IWW) will take place to discuss the application of the Wigner function in the descirption of several quantum processes in the fields of physics, chemistry and engineering.
Deadlines for participating can be found at the following link: https://iwcn2023.uab.es/deadlines.html

Nat Conference: "The Language of Neurons"
Description:
Experts in cutting-edge brain research explore the latest in "neural representation" in the first Nat Conference, organised by the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), with the collaboration of the UAB.
Neural representation is a concept that refers to the 'language' used by neurons to communicate with each other and pass on information. The conference will include the participation of some of the top researchers from the field of neuroscience, who have dedicated projects and papers to the concept of neural representation. With different views on this issue, each of them provides valuable knowledge that will generate an interesting debate between speakers and the audience.
The conference, structured into two sessions, one academic and another more informative, will be offered by UAB experts Òscar Vilarroya, research director of the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine and coordinator of the Mental Health Neuroimage Research Group at the IMIM, and Angélique Lebert, post-doc researcher at both centres.
For more information and to sign up for the conference please visit: https://natconference.museuciencies.cat/
Place: Natural Science Museum of Barcelona (The NAT), Parc del Fòrum

Seminar with Jim van Os: "Una nueva comprensión de las causas y el abordaje de los trastornos mentales"
Description:
Renowned psychiatrist and epidemiologist Jim van Os will offer a research seminar on mental disorders “Una nueva comprensión de las causas y el abordaje de los trastornos mentales: poniendo la persona, la sociedad y la complejidad en el centro de la investigación”, as part of the PhD programme in Clinical and Health Psychology, coordinated by the research group Interacció Persona-Ambient en Salut Mental at the UAB Department Clinical and Health Psychology.
Jim van Os is Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Maastricht University Medical Centre, lecturer at Utrecht University and visiting lecturer at King's College London Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. He is considered one of the foremost experts in mental research. His work focuses on the redefinition of mental disorders, the causal role of macro-social and everyday contextual factors in health and how these interact with genetic and psychological variability in a wide variety of mental disorders. He is critical with the medical dominance of mental health management and advocates placing the individual at the centre as an active agent and co-responsible for his or her treatment.
Professor van Os is part of the list of the Thompson-Reuter Web of Science "Most Influential Scientific Minds" and "Highly Cited Researchers". He is also co-author of 800 publications, including journals such as Nature, Lancet and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), among others.
The seminar is open and forms part of the UAB year dedicated to mental health.
