Los Premios de Física Real Sociedad Española de Física-Fundación BBVA reconocen anualmente desde 2008 la creatividad, el esfuerzo y el logro en el campo de la física con el fin de servir de estímulo a los profesionales que desarrollan su labor tanto en la investigación, como en los ámbitos de las enseñanzas secundaria y universitaria, la innovación, la tecnología y la divulgación. Se presentan a continuación los galardonados en la edición de 2024 y la composición de los jurados.

An International study led by UAB researcher Ariane Arias-Ortiz, and published in Global Change Biology, has analysed methane gas fluxes in over a hundred tidal wetlands and marshes in the USA. The analysis has identified key environmental factors affecting methane emissions and has allowed a larger set of standardised data on greenhouse gas emissions in those ecosystems to be produced. These data can be used to account for greenhouse gases with greater precision and improve climate models.

Rafel Escribano gave the talk “Electroweak Symmetry Breaking”, in the UAB Science Faculty, as part of the monthly pizza seminar organized by the UAB Physics Students Association, a delegation of the RSEF students association.

The artist Lydia Ourahmane presents the exhibition “108 days” at the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona), in which every day different people and groups present their thoughts, work, experiences, etc. One of the days is dedicated to Cosmology.

From February 10 and for 5 Saturdays, the Faculty of Sciences will host the 24rd Physics Saturdays. An initiative of the Department of Physics whose main objective is to bring physics and science closer to young pre-university students and motivate them to learn about the world around us in a rigorous and, at the same time, understandable way.

Fabrizio Rompineve, researcher at the UAB Department of Physics and at the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE), has been awarded the Buchalter Cosmology Prize for his research on gravitational waves from the early universe.

Researchers from the UAB and ICMAB have managed to take wireless technology to the fundamental level of magnetic devices. The appearance and control of magnetic properties in layers of cobalt nitride (initially non-magnetic) by means of voltage, without connecting the sample to electrical wiring, published in Nature Communications, represents a paradigm shift that can facilitate the creation of magnetic nanorobots for the biomedicine and computer systems where basic information management processes do not require wiring.

In order to attract and retain talent, 48 new positions (17 at the UAB) of lecturer and assistant professor will be offered by the Generalitat. All the positions are included in the Serra Húnter Programme. The application period begins on September 18 and will end on October 13.

Researchers from the UAB and the ICN2 have developed a methodology that makes it possible for the first time to observe under the microscope, in real time, what happens when glass is heated and changes to a supercooled liquid phase, known as the "glass transition". The research, published in Nature Physics, is of great importance for the cryopreservation of proteins, cells and living tissues, for the manufacture of drugs and electronic devices, and for tissue engineering, where this glass-to-liquid transition plays a key role.
