City of Men: Masculinities and Everyday Morality on Public Transport

On Friday, April 17, the fifth seminar of the Geography and Gender Research Group of this academic year will take place.

“City of Men: Masculinities and Everyday Morality on Public Transport”

A càrrec de Romit Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The seminar will explore masculinities in urban contexts across South Asia, focusing on how men experience gender and construct norms of behavior in public spaces. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted on public transportation in Kolkata, India, the seminar will analyze the dynamics of interaction, cooperation, and conflict among different groups of men, as well as their relationships with transportation workers, police officers, and passengers. The session will reflect on the role of everyday morality and forms of situated support in the reproduction of male privileges in the city.
