The PhD Program in Geography organizes the training activity: "Making Sense of the Research Evidence: An Introduction to Systematic Reviews", by Biljana Macura, SEI.
Talk summary: In an era of rapidly growing research output, synthesizing scientific information rigorously, comprehensively, and transparently is more important than ever. This session provides a foundational understanding of systematic reviews and systematic maps—the gold standard for collating and synthesizing research evidence. It will cover systematic evidence synthesis process, discuss when systematic reviews and maps are (or aren’t) appropriate, and offer strategies to improve traditional literature reviews and minimise sources of bias. The session will also introduce AI-driven tools for research synthesis automation, and outline key principles for the responsible use of AI in evidence synthesis.
Short bio: Biljana Macura is a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute (HQ) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Springer Nature journal – Environmental Evidence.¿ Biljana produces rigorous syntheses of scientific evidence, including systematic reviews and maps, to inform decision-making in environment and development. Biljana is particularly interested in evidence-informed decision-making, knowledge co-production and stakeholder engagement, policy needs assessment and use of different forms of evidence to investigate complex environmental and development problems. She also works on the improvement and development of methodology for evidence synthesis, including responsible use of AI technologies in this domain. In addition to her methodological work, she currently focuses on contested sustainability discourses in renewable energy development (see: https://www.sei.org/projects/greenvsgreen/).
