I Seminari Gènere 25-26

Next Friday, November 7, the first seminar of the Geography and Gender Research Group for the 2025-2026 academic year will take place. The seminar will feature Dr. Casey Lynch, Ramón y Cajal Researcher, Department of Geography, University of Girona, with the lecture: Feminist Geographies of AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often presented as the ultimate disruptive technology. In common discourses about the rise of AI, the evolving intelligence of digital systems gives them increasing autonomy in carrying out everyday actions, leading to the possible displacement of humans from decision-making systems and spaces. This talk critiques this dominant discourse and the basic concepts on which it is based. It then proposes an alternative theoretical approach to the geographies of AI informed by feminist geographies and feminist technoscience. In this approach, AI is not understood as an object (or an artificial subject) but as a relational and spatial practice. This shift diversifies the places, actors, and questions considered important to the geographies of AI. The talk will offer a broad overview of the different spaces and times in the production of AI as a phenomenon that have been (or should be) the subject of feminist critique, and then highlight three key moments in my own research and writing: the conceptualization of “intelligence” employed in conventional discourses on AI; the explicit gendered design and racialization of interactive AI agents; and the integration of AI agents into the spaces and rhythms of everyday life.

The activity is linked to the Doctoral Programs in Geography and the Doctoral Program in Gender Studies: Cultures, Societies, and Politics.
