GSK opens Spain’s first BSL‑4 laboratory
GSK has unveiled the first biosafety level 4 laboratory in Spain. The new facility strengthens scientific capacity in high‑risk pathogen research and in preparing for future epidemiological threats.
The biopharmaceutical company GSK has inaugurated the first operational biosafety level 4 (BSL‑4) laboratory in Spain, which is also the first of its kind in the world to be owned by a pharmaceutical company. The facility, located at GSK’s Global Health R&D Centre in Tres Cantos and built with an investment of 5.2 million euros, will boost research into highly dangerous pathogens and support the development of new strategies to address future epidemiological threats.
This new scientific space is equipped to work with microorganisms for which no effective treatments or preventive measures exist yet, such as malaria parasites or strains of multidrug‑resistant tuberculosis—one of the top global public health priorities.
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant. Access to the laboratory will be strictly limited to specialised, fully certified research personnel.
According to the president of GSK Spain, this new infrastructure strengthens the Tres Cantos centre’s position as an international benchmark in biomedical research and highlights the value of public‑private collaboration in developing strategic facilities for advancing global health.
