Open seminar INMIX-UAB: Degree activity - Doctorate training activity
"Media coverage of migrants and refugees in Spain and their resistance strategies", by Franca Ferrari Fuks
Tuesday, March 19: 11.30am-1pm.
Classroom B7/1058 - Seminar A
Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres
Summary: The seminar will analyze how the media in Spain contribute to the perpetuation of power asymmetries by representing migrants and refugees from the Global South through simplistic stereotypes, reducing the diversity that characterizes migratory movements to subjects without agency, victims/criminals, and dehumanized. From a critical analysis of the discourse and using concepts of postcolonial and intersectional feminism, we will debate the importance of media discourses towards these people, the disparity in treatment according to origin and the narrative about the feminization of migration. In addition, the strategies of racialized activists to resist these discourses will be discussed.
