Abstract

This paper focuses on how entrepreneurs venture in networks during the start-up phase by making use of their weak ties. To provide an accurate illustration of early venturing, we enrich the network perspective on entrepreneurship with an exchange-based approach. Specifically, employing a qualitative perspective with data obtained from sixteen family entrepreneurs in the wine industry in Greece, we explore how, as the firm emerges, weak ties are utilised through certain types of exchange. We find that it is utilitarian, restricted exchanges that take place among weak ties during this early stage. By doing so, we provide a novel insight as regards what exactly is going on during early venturing in networks.
