 Abstract

The overlap between family and business relationships characterizing family firms boards present unique opportunities and barriers for female directors. In this study we analyze how the nature of female directors’ relationship with the controlling family shapes their contribution to family firm performance. Building on board governance and family relationships literature we theorize that female directors affiliated with the controlling family face more barriers to provide a meaningful contribution at family firm board than their nonfamily counterparts. However, these barriers are not uniform but vary depending on the nature of family relationships at the board. The empirical analysis of 127 Italian listed family firms between 2003 and 2019 reveal support to our theory showing that family affiliation may undermine female directors’ contribution at the board. However, family-affiliated female directors can provide a meaningful contribution to family firm performance, but only when the presence of male family members at the board is low. This study uncovers heterogeneity among female directors profile and the board, highlighting the importance of family affiliation in defining female director’s profile. Second, our study provides support to doing gender perspective, explaining how social relationships among directors shape gender dynamics at corporate boards.
