Cristina Campos Alba (University of Granada) will present her paper “Efficiency analysis of the tourist accommodation sector in Spain”, joint work with María Ibarrondo Dávila (University of Granada), Gemma Pérez López (University of Granada) and Jésus Vela-Victoria (University of Granada).

Abstract

The tourism industry is one of the most important economic sectors, not only internationally but also for the specific case of Spain, which is one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. This sector is characterized by high competitiveness among companies because of globalisation. In order to understand better the performance of the enterprises, an efficiency analysis of the Spanish tourist accommodation sector is carried out, using the meta-frontier approach estimated by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The aim of this analysis is to determine the efficiency for evaluating the situation of the sector considering different types of accommodation. This paper contributes to the previous literature as studying the efficiency of the whole accommodations sector, by contrast with the majority of existing works, which were focused on the hotel sector. The number of enterprises taken into account is considerably higher than the average size of the samples utilised in other studies, having achieved a broader vision. Findings show that Hotels and similar accommodation category shows higher levels of efficiency than others, while Campsites and caravan parks have the lowers.
