The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, based in London and present in over 140 countries, has awarded the biggest prize in aeronautics, the William Sweet Smith Prize to the group LogiSim – Research Group on Modelling and Simulation of Logistics Systems, of the UAB Aeronautical Management Cluster, led by Miquel Àngel Piera.

This research group has previously obtained a SESAR Young Scientist Award (in 2012), from the top European aeronautics institution (SESAR), has been invited on to the scientific committees of the principal aeronautics conferences (ATM-Seminar and ICRAT, among others), and collaborates with Eurocontrol and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the USA.

The Aeronautical Management Cluster of the UAB currently collaborates with the main research groups in aeronautics: CRIDA, ENAC, Cranfield University and DLR, among others.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers award is due in particular to the paper “A causal model to explore the ACAS induced collisions” published in Journal of Aerospace Engineering, and based on a study by Dr Miquel Àngel Piera and Dr Tang Jun (pictured) in 2014.
