A total of twenty-one students from the degree in Physics and the double degree in Physics+Mathematics recently participated, in groups of three, in the international 2015 University Physics Competition. The competition, celebrated every year, received 150 submissions resolving a physics problem. Students were given 48 hours to solve one of the two available problems and present their solutions in the form of a scientific paper in English.

In one of the problems, students were faced with the challenges of "land formation" on Mars, i.e., how to create a warm climate capable of offering stability for liquid water based on the energy produced by the impact of comets and asteroids. The other problem focused on how to create a golf swing which could overcome a tree located between the ball and the hole.

Of the 150 papers sent in by teams around the world, two teams were awarded a gold medal, 25 received silver medals and 43 received bronze medals. The UAB teams fared well, with three silver and one bronze medal for solving one of the problems and two bronze medals for the other problem.
