The School of Engineering will host on 7 and 8 May the first NEREUS COST ACTION meeting, a leading European project on wastewater reuse. The event has been organised by the GENOCOV research group, belonging to the UAB Department of Chemical Engineering.

This is the largest action carried out under the framework of this project, the broadest COST project to to be put into operation until now (COST stands for European Cooperation in Science and Technology and is the longest-running European framework supporting trans-national cooperation among researchers, engineers and scholars across Europe). The meeting will include 85 researchers from 29 countries of the European Union, Australia, United States, Israel and Tunisia. They will discuss current challenges and opportunities in the field of wastewater reuse, and will set the bases to work in collaboration on this topic.

NEREUS will set up work groups for the different biological aspects, the identification of viable and efficient technologies, and for the development of risk assessment models and political frameworks. NEREUS is also interested in establishing technology and evaluation methods criteria for wastewater treatment, as well as suggesting new effluent quality indicators in order to overcome current barriers and safeguard reuse practices.

GENOCOV - Group for the biological treatment of effluent gas and liquid The main objective of the Elimination of Volatile Nutrients, Smells and Organic Compounds (GENOCOV) group is to provide an integral management of the treatment of biological effluents and is the leading research group in this field in all of Spain. María Eugenia Suárez-Ojeda and Julián Carrera, lecturers of the Department of Chemistry and members of GENOCOV, are the coordinators of this meeting.
