UAB offers 5 new minors starting in the 2014/15 academic year

Starting in 2014/15, the UAB offers a total of 16 minors, specialisations for undergraduates interested in acquiring knowledge in a different discipline and earning elective credits. Five new minors will be offered, in classical culture, translation and interpreting, sustainability and global citizenship, East Asia and human palaeontology.

22/07/2014

This year, students will be able to choose from five new minors in: Classical Culture, Translation and Interpreting, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship, East Asian Studies, and Human Evolution and Palaeontology.

A minor is a university itinerary organised by a UAB centre and addressed to students of different degree studies. Its purpose it to help students acquire skills belonging to a different academic discipline by allowing them to enrol in subjects offered in other bachelor's degrees.

Once all subjects in the minor itinerary are passed, students are issued a European Diploma Supplement once they complete their degree. In addition, the credits taken in the minor will form part of the total of credits needed to obtain a university degree and will count as elective credits of the degree the student is studying.

UAB's offer of minor studies allows students to receive a more specialised and internationalised training, with the aim of being better prepared for future employment options. The five new minors are:

Minor in Classical Culture

Through a variety of subjects belonging to the degrees in Classics and Humanities, the minor allows you to acquire broad and varied knowledge on the Greco-Roman world (literature, thought, history and mythology) and its survival until modern days. The course provides basic training which can be used to teach the secondary school subject of Classical Culture.

Minor in Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

The Minor in Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship aims to provide scientific approaches to the structural causes of inequalities and the critical analysis of existing developmental models and policies, the relation of powers at international levels and other paradigms of development, and the strategies, methods and devices for citizen participation activities aimed at transforming society.

Minor in East Asian Studies

The minor offers a selection of subjects from the bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies with which students can expand their knowledge of this region from an interdisciplinary, analytic and critical perspective. No previous knowledge of the minor's subject areas is required, except for modern Chinese and Japanese: depending on the subject chosen, level A1, A2 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Minor in Human Evolution and Palaeontology

The objective of the minor is to provide students with basic training in human palaeontology. This discipline is not part of any state-regulated education, although it is a highly attractive field for students in geology, archaeology and biosciences interested in specialising in human evolution. It represents an added value to any education, given the almost non-existence of these types of studies in Catalonia.

Minor in Translation and Interpreting

The minor offers a selection of subjects from the bachelor's degree in Translation and Interpreting and is addressed to students with a previous knowledge of French and German, interested in pursuing a career in multilingual environments. It is necessary to have a B2 or C1 Level in French or German on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

In addition to the five new minors, students enrolling in the 2014/15 academic year can opt for minors in:

  • Language Sciences
  • Medieval Romance Cultures and Literatures
  • Language and Voice Problems
  • German Studies
  • Basque Studies
  • Philosophy
  • Galician Studies
  • Gender Studies
  • Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Portuguese Studies
  • Italian Studies
