Translation and Interpreting and Education

The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting will mark the opening of its academic year with a ceremony on 1 October at noon, in Aula 2. This year is dedicated to interpreting and Icíar Alonso, lecturer at the University of Salamanca, will offer a conference entitled "No disparen al traductor: visibilidad e identidad de los intérpretes en conflictos bélicos" (Do not Shoot the Interpreter: the visibility and identity of interpreters in war conflicts).

Also speaking will be Ferran Sancho, Rector of the UAB, and Laura Santamaria, Dean of the faculty. Following the event, the photo exhibit "Los cien años de soledad del intérprete: entre la historia y la memoria" (100 Years of Solitude: between history and memories), will be inaugurated, prepared under the directorship of Icíar Alonso and with a sample of images taken by interpreters in the past century, with comments by students from the faculty of translation and interpreting.

Dr Alonso earned her bachelor's degree and PhD in translation and interpreting. Since 1996 she works as a freelance translator and interpreter. At the University of Salamanca she lectures on techniques for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting for public services. Her research is linked to three main areas: history of language and cultural mediation, interpreting for public services and methods for teaching interpreting. She is member of the Alfaqueque research group and belongs to the Comunica network, a permanent observatory on translation and interpreting for public services.

On the same day, 1 October, the Faculty of Education will inaugurate the new academic year at 12:30 pm at the Sala de Graus conference hall. The opening conference, entitled "Modernització conservadora i política educativa" (Conservative Modernisation and Education Policies), will be given by UAB sociologist Xavier Bonal. On that same day at 6 pm, also at the conference hall, the faculty will inaugurate its official master's degree programmes with a speech on educational challenges existing in this new society, offered by Joan Manuel del Pozo, UAB graduate who also studied in the US.

Business and Economics

On Thursday 2 October, the opening session of the Faculty of Business and Economics will take place at noon at the conference hall of the faculty. Marc Siscart, general director of Viena, will be in charge of giving the inaugural speech "De l'acadèmia americana a la PIME Catalana: coses que he après... i que potser són falses". (From the American Academies to the SMEs of Catalonia: things I've learned... and which may not be true). Also speaking will be Ferran Sancho, Rector of the UAB, and Jordi Massó, Dean of the faculty.

Siscart holds a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Studies by the UAB and a PhD in Economics by the University of New York thanks to a grant from "la Caixa". He is son of Silvestre Siscart, one of the founders of Viena restaurants, where he began working in 2006. Two years later he was nominated general director of the company. The Viena food chain was founded in 1969 with some forty establishments throughout Catalonia and Andorra. Its headquarters are located in Sabadell and the company employs some 1,400 people.
