UAB celebrates International Fascination of Plants Day

Dia Mundial Fascinació per les Plantes
The Plant Physiology Unit has organised an exhibit which will be on display during the month of May at the Library of Science and Technology as part of the celebrations marking International Fascination of Plants Day.

29/04/2015

On 18 May, International Fascination of Plants Day, the Plant Physiology Unit of the Faculty of Biosciences offered a conference entitled "Plants: Nutrition and Health”, given by Dr Josep Allué Creus, lecturer in Plant Physiology at the UAB. Following the conference, attendants were able to taste different types of plant infusions. The event took place at 1 pm at the Sala de Graus of the Faculty of Biosciences.

In addition, during the month of May the UAB Library of Science and Technology will be offering an exhibit on plants with information on different types of seeds, germination methods, in vitro and hydroponic plant cultivation, videos, publications (books, journals, conference papers) and different types of plants.

The International Fascination of Plants Day 2015 is celebrated under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). The objective of this day is to make evident the importance of plants in our lives. Plants capture energy from the sun and transform it into sugars which become part of the biomass and feed both humans and animals. Given their ability to manufacture their own food, plants have successfully colonised practically all of the planet's ecological nooks and crannies, adapting to different environments and diversifying themselves. It is estimated that some 250,000 plant species exist on Earth.

For the organisers, the purpose of celebrating this day is to be able to plant seeds which can grow in the collective mind of Europe's citizens and of people around the world, to remind us that plant research is of critical importance to society, the environment and the economy, both now and in the future.
