The programme is an initiative by the Intersindical Alternativa de Catalunya association. The Vacances per la Pau (Vacations for Peace) has been organised each year since 2008 and consists in inviting children from Palestine to spend a three-week holiday in Barcelona.

The UAB's Vila Universitària is the starting point of a complete programme of activities which includes the Tibidabo amusement park and day excursions to towns such as Vic and Sort.

The group is formed by children aged 8 to 11 years old living in refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank and for whom a few days on holiday in Barcelona represent "a dream come true, a unique experience they will not forget in their lifetime", said Bassam Samour at the welcoming ceremony on 27 July. Samour, together with María Huzain, are the two coordinators of the Vacances per la Pau project in Palestine.

UAB Rector Margarita Arboix welcomed the children at the ceremony and invited them to enjoy their stay in Barcelona. She also encouraged them to “study hard and return to the UAB in the future as university students”.
