Lecturers of the UAB Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering Francesc Gòdia and Pau Ferrer organise a scientific meeting on industrial biology and its evolution. The event will take place on 14 and 15 February at Barcelona's CosmoCaixa (Carrer Isaac Newton 26). The activity forms part of the B·DEBATE, an initiative by Biocat with support from the Obra Social “la Caixa” with the aim of fostering high level international meetings for the debate, collaboration and open exchange of knowledge among the most prestigious national and international experts in dealing with the complex and most pressing challenges existing in life sciences. The debates help to integrate a variety of scientific disciplines.

Biotechnology is one of the pillars of knowledge-based bio-economics (KBBE) acclaimed by the European Commission as a unique opportunity for Europe to increase its efficiency in this type of research. The increase in population and its progressive ageing make clear the need for a more sustainable and rational use of resources, such as raw materials and energy, and industrial biotechnology can aid in the development of the bioprocesses needed to make this possible. Industrial biotechnology includes two main application sectors: white biotechnology, dedicated to the production of chemical and energy products, and red biotechnology, addressed to applications in the health sector.

The objective of the sessions is to generate interdisciplinary and international debates, where scientists of different areas can discuss the most relevant problems related to the development of industrial biotechnology for the production of chemical and energy products, the use of renewable resources, sustainability, production of biodrugs and vaccines, treatment of rare diseases and global responses to global health threats, within a context of responsible innovation.
