The UAB FM: an eco-friendly festival!

The UAB FM characteristically takes waste management and responsible use of facilities very seriously. The UAB is a pioneer in terms of environmental management, and multiple initiatives are planned, to make for a sustainable festival.

Sustainability at the UAB FM is based on three essential aspects: the exchange of glass containers (glasses, bottles, etc.), the collaboration of the students’ stalls in waste management and the reusable cups.

Recycling is the key to proper waste management and we should highlight the active participation of the students at the students’ stalls and those helping in the FM’s waste management. The students’ stalls will do their part by sorting waste such as plastics, cardboard, organic waste, etc. Also, to achieve our recycling standards, a group of students will be managing the Collecting and Storing Centre in the Plaça del Coneixement. The Collecting and Storing Centre is specifically intended to help the students’ stalls in the selective collection of waste.

Reducing environmental impact caused by the FM takes more than just proper recycling; therefore, it is essential to promote reusing. To this end, the UAB believes in reusable cups instead of regular glasses, tin cans and glass bottles. That is the reason why you can buy 1€ plastic cups at the students’ stalls. At the end of the festival, you can return your cup and get your money back. Thus, the intention is to reduce waste to the maximum extent possible, and you can always keep the plastic cup as an FM souvenir if you like. The UAB was a pioneer in the introduction of this initiative, currently adopted in most festivals.

Finally, the third fundamental aspect of the FM’s sustainability scheme is the exchange of glass containers for plastic containers. Two years ago, it was concluded that glass was the most abundant material among the waste produced at the FM and the material that caused most incidents. To prevent all this, for the third year in a row, there will be 6 different points to exchange glass bottles for plastic containers. 3 of these points will be placed in the Plaça Cívica and 3 more in the Plaça del Coneixement.
