The Faculty of Translation and the Instituto Camões open a call for the XVIII Pontiero Prize

The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, together with the Instituto Camões, opens its call for the 2018 Giovanni Pontiero Prize for Translation.

The 18th edition of the Giovanni Pontiero Prize for Translation will award the best translation into Spanish of an original in Portuguese. The award includes a cash prize of €4000.Translators can participate with a work of any genre published between 1 January 2016 and 21 December 2017.

The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and the Instituto Camões once again organise the Giovanni Pontiero Prize for Translation, created in memory of the Portuguese translator, well-known for his translations of José Saramago's works.

Pontiero (1932-1996) studied at the University of Glasgow, where he earned his PhD with a thesis on the poetry of Manuel Bandeira. Although he also translated from Spanish and Italian, he focused his work on Brazilian and Portuguese authors.

The jury is formed by a member elected by the dean of the faculty, a member appointed by the Instituto Camões, another member appointed by the Friends of Giovanni Pontiero, a renowned expert in Luso-Brazilian studies and a secretary (without vote), in representation of the entities organising the event.

Applications can be sent in until 10 September 2018. The jury's choice will be made public at the awards ceremony, to be held on 24 October.
