TDX now includes over 5,000 UAB theses

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) recently added thesis number 5,000 to its online PhD thesis network (Tesi Doctoral en Xarxa - TDX) and is the first university in Catalonia in terms of PhD thesis production.

The TDX is a cooperative repository, coordinated by the CSUC (Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya), which offers free access to all PhD theses defended in Catalonia, thereby contributing to the visibility of research projects and fostering their distribution.

According to data gathered by the CSUC, the UAB is the first university in Catalonia in number of PhD theses (and one of the first in Spain). The theses read at the UAB each year represent almost one-third of all theses defended in Catalonia's universities (651 PhD theses read at the UAB in the 2012/2013 academic year, followed by 633 at the UB, 319 at the UPC, 153 at the UPF, 87 at the UdG, 59 at the UdL and 159 at the URV).

The number of UAB theses published on the TDX recently reached 5,000 with the incorporation of the thesis by Elisabet Velo i Fabregat, entitled “Gènere i treball al Poble Sec (Barcelona) 1960-1975”, directed by Olga Paz Torres and presented in the UAB Department of Public Law and the History of Law.

Elisabet Velo's thesis analyses legislative policies during the Franco dictatorship concerning labour conditions of women from 1960 to 1975. Her dissertation was based on the design, transcription and analysis of 30 interviews with women who were born, lived or worked in Barcelona's Poble Sec neighbourhood during those years. Her research demonstrates a new approach to labour history from a gender perspective, with the application and knowledge of the legal provisions existing at each moment, in the heart of such a vibrant scenario such as Poble Sec, a working-class neighbourhood of Barcelona.
