The UAB is set on surpassing last year's figure of 2,144 participants in this year's Cursa de la UAB

The Cursa de la UAB in support of the Marató de TV3, organised by the UAB and with the collaboration with the City Council of Cerdanyola del Vallès and the Catalan Network of Healthy Universities (Us.cat), will take place on Sunday 14 December, at the Bellaterra Campus.

This year, the UAB once again is devoted to organising this sportive and solidarity celebration, after the success of last year's edition, in which 2,144 people signed up for the race and 9,000 euros were raised. Last year funds went to treating neurodegenerativ3e diseases. An additional 100 volunteers, coordinated by the Autònoma Solidarity Foundation (FAS) who took on several organisation tasks, also participated.

The UAB, the first university in Catalonia to organise such a large race, this year aims to surpass the number of participants who signed up last year. That is why this year the UAB invites all university students from Catalonia to participate.

Coinciding with the Cursa de la UAB, there will once again be an Entities Fair. The associations present this year work with cardiovascular diseases, and all money raised by the Marató de TV3 will go to treating these diseases. The objective is to disseminate and give information on these diseases to the general public. Some of the associations which will be present at the Entities Fair are: Cardiopaties Congenites, Asociación Española de Glucogenosis, MPS España, Associació Catalana d'Ataxies, ASSEM Catalunya and Associació Síndrome de DENT.

The basic price to participate in the race is 10 euros, while prices vary for federated participants or those wanting to run with a chip.

Nike has reached an agreement with the UAB and will distribute the race shirts for free. The sports shirt is made of a special fabric made especially for runners.

Upon completing the race, all participants will be offered soup, courtesy of the Hotel Campus, and isotonic drinks. Participants will also be able to benefit from a recovery session with UAB physiotherapy students.

The race is 9 km long and the walk is 5 km long.
Its course has been slightly modified this year to include a few improvements with regards to last year's race. Thus, there will be a 9 km race which will begin at 11 am at the Vila Universitària, and a 5 km walk, which will begin at the same place at 11:20 am. There will also be a race for people with reduced mobility.

The itineraries for the 9 km race and the 5 km walk are very similar. The race will begin at Vila Universitària and runners will go down to the first roundabout and turn right on the Ronda de la Font del Carme, passing the General Laboratory for Testing and Research (LGAI) until reaching the roundabout which leads to the bridge crossing over the motorway. The runners will cross the bridge and reach the area in from of the castle. They will then turn right and circle around the Alba Synchrotron until reaching the road connecting Cerdanyola and Sant Cugat. Once at the road, they will reach the crossing of Castell de Sant Marçal and go on to the castle gardens.

After once again returning to the Ronda de la Font del Carme and next to the UAB Columns, runners with turn left towards the UAB physical activities centre, SAF, and reach the Rectorate building. Once they reach the highest point behind the Rectorate building, participants will turn and take a dirt road, one of the roads belonging to a Via Verda (approximately 500 m.) until they reach the back part of the FGC Bellaterra station. Finally, they will once again take to a concrete road and head straight towards the finish line.

The 5 km walk is very similar to the race, but participants will not cross the bridge or reach the castle.

A Very Gender Equal Race
Last year the Cursa de la UAB stood out for the near equality of number of men and women participating. Of the 2,144 participants, 51% were men and 49% were women. Forty per cent of those registered ran the 10 km race, 28% ran the 6 km race and the remaining 32% participated in the 6 km walk. Among the men, last year's 10 km race was won by Artur Bossy, from the Athletic Club Barcelona, with a time of 31 minutes and 55 seconds, while among the women the 10 km race was won by Marta Castroviejo, with a time of 40 minutes and 48 seconds.
