The Catalan Government (Generalitat) and the FCRi awarded Matgas with this distinction as an example of collaboration between public and private entities which has known how to combine the strength of both type of institutions in working in cutting edge research at international level.

Matgas works on materials sciences and gas applications at its facilities located on the UAB campus. It is the result of a strategic alliance between the company Carburos Metálicos (belonging to the multinational group Air Products), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the UAB, and is legally recognised as a not-for-profit group of economic interest. At its facilities, researchers conduct projects related to basic research, technological developments and business management models focused on the energy, sustainability and environment sectors. It is also a centre of excellence in CO2 and sustainability.

In recent years, Matgas has actively participated in five European projects (SURFACET, SuperGreenChem, LoliPEM, HyTEC and SOFCOM), it has led the technical management of the CENIT SOST-CO2 project and has participated in the CENIT BioSOS project “Biorefineria Sostenible”, as well as taken part in other projects financed through competitive funding or the private sector.

Air Products recently incorporated Matgas into its network of world renowned centres, and it is leader in research on the application of gasses in the agro-food sector, the treatment of waters and the study of new uses for carbon dioxide.
