Joaquín Roy talks about relations between the European Union and the US

On 4 July at noon the conference hall of the Faculty of Law hosted a conference entitled "Relations between the European Union and the United States". The conference was given by Joaquín Roy, professor at the University of Miami and holder of a Jean Monnet ad personam chair. The event was organised by the Institute for European Studies and the European Documentation Centre of the UAB.

Roy earned his degree in law from the University of Barcelona and later went on to work as a university professor in the United States. He received his PhD from the University of Georgetown, taught at the John Hopkins University in Washington and at the Emory University in Atlanta, and is professor at the University of Miami since 1976. He is a faculty member of the Department of International Studies and lectures on European politics and history, as well as on Latin America. He is also director of the University of Miami's European Union Center and co-director of the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence. He also holds a Jean Monnet ad personam chair, a specific recognition awarded to a university professor by the European Union under the Jean Monnet Action programme, which aims to "increase knowledge on European integration by promoting teaching, research and debate on European issues".

He has published over 200 academic articles and reviews in leading journals and is the author, editor or co-editor of 38 books. Some of his most outstanding works are El pensamiento demócrata-cristiano (Madrid ICI), The Reconstruction of Central America: The Role of the European Community (North-South Center) and The Ibero-American Space / El Espacio Iberoamericano (University of Miami). He has also published articles in newspapers such as El País, Cinco Días and Crónica Global. Among his awards is the Encomienda of the Order of Merit bestowed by King Juan Carlos of Spain.
