On 9 November at noon, the auditorium (Sala d'Actes) of the Faculty of Business and Economics will host the inauguration of the 2016/17 academic year. The inaugural speech, entitled “Transforming to a Knowledge Economy: The Role of Innovation Ecosystems and Dynamic Capabilities”, will be given by Prof David Teece from the University of California, Berkeley.

David Teece holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently the director of the Center for Global Strategy and Governance and academic director of the Institute for Business Innovation, at the Haas School of Business. He is the author of over 30 books, 200 academic papers and has more than 100,000 Google Scholar citations. Dr Teece is also co-founder and director of the Berkeley Research Group, where the latest academic knowledge is applied to practical cases within the context of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Silicon Valley.

In addition to being an authority in the field of industrial organisation, technological change and innovation, he is especially known for creating the concept of dynamic capabilities, which refers to the capacities of businesses to integrate, construct and reconfigure both internal and external competences, in order to face the challenges posed by rapidly changing environments.

Also on 9 November, at 5 p.m., Dr Teece will visit the UAB Research Park to give a lecture on "Dynamic Capabilities Applied to the Business World: a Vision from Silicon Valley", addressed to entrepreneurs interested in discovering how to improve their businesses. Thanks to these two sessions, the inauguration of the academic year will include a more theoretical side and also a more applied and practical one.
